Cavity Wall Insulation

Why do I need Cavity Wall Insulation?

Cavity wall insulation and loft insulation are the two most important pieces of insulation in any household. If they are both fitted correctly they can prevent up to 60% of heat loss from your home.

What is Cavity Wall Insulation?

Cavity wall insulation is used to stop heat escaping from your home through the exterior walls. The heat loss is caused by the movement of air (convection) in the cavity spaces within the walls. When insulation is inserted into the cavity it prevents the air from moving about - the air is the actual insulator - and it becomes trapped within the porous insulation material, ensuring that your home remains warm and energy efficient. Mineral wool (the fuzzy yellow stuff, pictured right) is generally used in new buildings. For buildings that were not built with insulation, other materials such as polystyrene beads or u.f. foam are sprayed or injected into the cavities.

Do all Homes have Cavity Walls?

If your house was built within the last fifteen years then it will almost certainly have cavity walls, with a 95% chance that cavity insulation has already been installed - most houses dating from 1930 to the present day have cavity walls and those built before that date generally do not. If your house does have cavities they may not be insulated. If you own your home, more information will be provided with the documentation you received when you bought it. If you rent then your landlord or local authority will be able to tell you - If you do not own your home you may be entitled to a free government grant to help with the cost of installing cavity wall insulation.

The Benefits of Cavity Wall Insulation

To fit Cavity wall insulation in the average home costs about £500 and you will save approximately £100 a year on fuel bills, so it will pay for itself in five years - and that's not the only benefit:
  • Your home will be warmer and more comfortable
  • You will be less likely to become ill
  • It will increase the value of your property
  • You will save around 750 kg of CO2 a year - reducing your carbon footprint and helping the environment.
  • There will be less wear and tear on your boiler and heating equipment
  • Levels of condensation within your home will be reduced
